Welcome to Brighton Rowing Club's Spring Season!

Spring sweep rowing for high school students, and modified sculling for middle school students are in in full swing. We currently have 55 participants registered in the two programs.

You do not have to be a resident of Brighton to participate in our programs Currently we have students rowing with us who attend school in Irondequoit, Gates Chili, the Rochester City Schools, and the area Catholic schools.

BRC is the only local club that offers sculling instruction to youth.

Practices are held two times per week, and the program has a non-competitive, instructional emphasis. It is open to students grade seven and up. If you are interested and want more details, contact Tim Giarrusso at 737-0069. Lucas Ogden, a former sweep rowing coach, will coach the sculling program. Welcome back Lucas!

What's the difference between sweep rowing and sculling?

Sculling-

Sculling is rowing with two oars and can be done in a single, double, or quad. Sculling does not use coxswains, instead the rowers steer the boat by making small adjustments to the pull of their oars as one rower look backwards down the course. Practices are held twice per week and the emphasis is primarily instructional. Scullers do not travel to away regattas.  They will have an opportunity to compete in the last regatta of the season at Pittsford.

Sweep Rowing-

In sweep rowing, each athlete has one oar. There are either four or eight rowers, plus a coxswain in the boat. The coxswain steers the boat with cables attached to a small rudder. The sweep rowers practice five days per week. The emphasis is instructional, as well as competitive.  BRC travels on the weekends to area regattas.  This spring the club will travel to Ohio (Varsity only), Syracuse, Saratoga, and Pittsford.

2008 Summer Programs-

There are a number of local rowing programs available to youth this summer. If you go to our information page, you can find links to the Pittsford Crew's and Fairport Crew¹s websites. Pittsford will run a Learn-to-Row program for beginners as well as an intramural program.  Fairport will offer a week of rowing camp as well a highly competitive program for the area¹s top rowers.

Information about what Brighton Rowing Club and the Genesee Waterways Center are planning for youth this summer will be available soon. Please check back with us!
